    Industrial Engineer Career Overview
If you are considering a career as an Industrial Engineer then it’s possible you are the type who enjoys the challenge of problem solving and project implementation across many diversified business and technical environments.

The Industrial Engineer operates from a different point of view than many other engineering type positions. They operate specifically to address the issues of productivity, efficiency and quality in the areas of business practices, customer service, production lines, service lines, etc. It is the job of the Industrial Engineer to determine how things can be done faster, better, and more cost effectively in any type of work environment.

The person who excels as an Industrial Engineer is one who can rapidly and comfortably exercise a number of different skills. As the Industrial Engineer goes through his day, he or she will be an observer, listener, and a problem solver. He or she will analyze all the components of a problem and develop solutions. These solutions, when implemented, will bring the company or department to the next level. He or she will “sell” management on the benefits of the change to ensure all concerned parties are comfortable. A career as an Industrial Engineer is not only rewarding and challenging, it provides for natural advancement into managerial positions.

The role of the Industrial Engineer spans many fields and businesses. For example, companies in the automobile industry may hire an Industrial Engineer to review production line efficiency while a hospital may hire an Industrial Engineer to streamline and improve doctor/patient visits. In essence, when a company sees a need to improve the quality and quantity of a product or service delivered, the responsibility lies with the Industrial Engineer to bring about that improvement.

    Industrial Engineer Training & Education
The most important thing to consider when looking into for Industrial Engineer degree programs is how a college degree can improve your career. By earning a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, you can begin your career with a consulting firm or a large corporation.

By earning a Master’s or Doctoral degree, you will be able to advance into senior analyst and managerial positions. Often, companies will require fewer years of experience for specific positions if you have a graduate degree allowing you to climb the corporate ladder faster than ever.

In your research you would do well to visit the website of the institute of industrial engineers and review their information on accreditation. They point out the importance of institutes and programs having received accreditation which helps to ensure that the institution or program has met the quality standards.

    Industrial Engineer Career & Salary
You can make a good living as an Industrial Engineer. It is a field that has seen steady increases in pay over the years, an important factor when considering your future career. In 2002, the United States Department of Labor issued the median annual salary for the industrial engineers at $62,150. By 2007, that median had risen to $73,490.

It may also be useful to know how your college degrees can help with your beginning salary. In 2007, the National Association of Colleges and Employers conducted a survey that revealed people with bachelor’s degrees were being offered average beginning wages of $55,067, while master’s degree graduates were averaging $64,759, and Ph.D. graduates were being offered average beginning salaries of $77,364.

    Characteristics of Industrial Engineers
    Communication and Persuasion
It is important for the person interested in a career as an Industrial Engineer to have a strong ability to communicate and to be persuasive. Often, he or she will find that one of the great challenges in implementing changes to bring about a greater efficiency and higher quality product will be the resistance he or she encounters at the managerial level. They are confronted with managers who have developed their own methods of getting the work done and may not easily agree that there could be a better way. The Industrial Engineer will need to address the resistive manager with sound findings and non-confrontational communication, showing the benefits of the changes.

    Eyes and Ears
A key part of this type of work is information and observation. Not only will the industrial engineer interview employees to determine strengths and weaknesses, he or she will observe workers in action. The ability to siphon through the data that is accumulated and find the true from the false is critical. He or she must have sound judgment, and must be able to look and listen before making recommendations for improvement.
